Waymo's Robotaxis Can Now Use the Highway, Speeding Up Longer Trips

WIRED

Waymo's Robotaxis Can Now Use the Highway, Speeding Up Longer Trips The Alphabet company's self-driving cars are opening up shop in more and more cities. When Google's self-driving car project began testing in the Bay Area back in 2009, its engineers focused on highways by sending its sensor-laden vehicles cruising down Interstate 280, which runs the length of Silicon Valley's peninsula. More than 15 years later, the cars are back on the freeway--this time without drivers. On Tuesday, the project, now an Alphabet subsidiary we all know as Waymo, announced that its robotaxi service would now drive on freeways in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. The new service marks another technical leap for Waymo, whose robotaxis currently serve five US metros: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has crossed a threshold. "In the past five years, AI has made the leap from something that mostly happens in research labs or other highly controlled settings to something that's out in society affecting people's lives," says Michael Littman, chair of the One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence, hosted at Stanford. It's easy to see what he's talking about: The technology's impact can be seen introducing automation, driving efficiency gains and enhancing productivity, creating new jobs, and reducing risks associated with cyber-threats and fraud. During the pandemic, AI enabled more effective testing for Covid-19 and faster vaccine development, and helped manage grocery supply chains and tailor lessons for individual students affected by remote schooling. As AI expands into more and more facets of our lives, there is also more scrutiny on who's developing it.

ContraQA: Question Answering under Contradicting Contexts

Pan, Liangming, Chen, Wenhu, Kan, Min-Yen, Wang, William Yang

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

With a rise in false, inaccurate, and misleading information in propaganda, news, and social media, real-world Question Answering (QA) systems face the challenges of synthesizing and reasoning over contradicting information to derive correct answers. This urgency gives rise to the need to make QA systems robust to misinformation, a topic previously unexplored. We study the risk of misinformation to QA models by investigating the behavior of the QA model under contradicting contexts that are mixed with both real and fake information. QA, which contains over 10K human-written and model-generated contradicting pairs of contexts. Experiments show that QA models are vulnerable under contradicting contexts brought by misinformation. To defend against such threat, we build a misinformation-aware QA system as a counter-measure that integrates question answering and misinformation detection in a joint fashion. A typical Question Answering (QA) system (Chen et al., 2017; Yang et al., 2019; Karpukhin et al., 2020; Lewis et al., 2020b) starts by retrieving a set of relevant context documents from the Web, which are then examined by a machine reader to identify the correct answer. Existing work equate Wikipedia as the web corpus. Therefore, all retrieved context documents are assumed to be clean and trustable. However, real-world QA faces a much noisier environment, where the web corpus is tainted with misinformation.

Electric cars could be topped up in less than 10 minutes thanks to 'battery swapping' stations

Daily Mail - Science & tech

San Francisco-based Ample announced a new battery charging technology that refuels electric vehicles from any automaker in just 10 minutes – three times faster than traditional systems. Using Modular Battery system, AI-powered robots remove the depleted battery and replace it with a fully charged unit – Ample says its batteries are like Lego-blocks that can accommodate any vehicle. Ample, started by Ex-Tesla and Google engineers, has constructed five battery swap stations in the San Francisco Bay Area, which can fit in two parking spots, specifically for Uber drivers. The technology comes as Tesla had promised deliver electric vehicle battery swapping stations in 2013, but the Elon Musk-owned company did not deliver - so the start-up moved to make it happen. 'Hopefully this is what convinces people finally that electric cars are the future,' Musk said, rallying a crowd at a splashy demo in 2013, also noting that battery of a Tesla Model S could be swapped in about 90 seconds. However, Musk said in 2015 that Tesla owners were not interested in swapping batteries and pulled the plug on pursuing a batter swapping station.
